tournament benefits technology at local schools

The fifth annual benefit golf tournament for Hanby Middle School and Patrick Elementary School will be Saturday, Oct. 17 at Laurel Hill Golf Course.

Entry fee is $30 per player, with signup and payment at the golf course.

Registration is at 7:15 a.m., with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Proceeds go toward technology at Hanby and Patrick schools.

rolls past Hafner for bowling win

Brian Tinsley of Klamath Falls rolled a 215 to top Medford's Greg Hafner in the championship game of the first Southern Oregon All-Stars bowling tournament of the season.

Tinsley rolled a 1,244 in the five-game semi-finals, with Hafner notching a 1,237.

Steve Mead of Ashland finished third at 1,210 and Medford's Bill Brickey fourth at 1,192.

Junior Leaders slate open horse show

Josephine 4-H Junior Horse Leaders are planning an open show Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Grants Pass Fairgrounds.

bowlers earn spot in prestigious tourney

Local bowlers Michele Rutigliano, Robert Gibson, Frankie Rutigliano each qualified for the Tournament of Champions in June of 1999 with their efforts in the Oregon Junior Classic Tournament at Northgate Lanes in Salem.

Michele Rutigliano finished first in the Class B boys division, qualifying in first place with a 1,040 series.

Gibson, of Central Point, placed second in Class A qualifying with a 1,182 series and placed fourth in the finals.

Frankie Rutigliano finished fifth in the Class A division, qualifying with a 1,090 series.

Other junior bowlers posting strong marks at the Salem tourney were Ashland's Jessica Davenhouer in Class A with a 171 average; Medford's Curtis Koch in Class A with a 946 series; Central Point's Holly Gibson in Class B with an 890 series; and Blake Daniels in Class B with an 838 series.

, Gentry sweep StoneRidge golf contest

Dave Helbert and Ken Gentry earned a sweep in the Beat The Pro competition Wednesday at StoneRidge, with each topping the efforts of course professional Jim Staal, who posted a target score of 74 gross and 69 net.

Helbert and Gentry each carded a gross score of 72, with Helbert's net total at 63 and Gentry's net total at 65.

Sixteen other golfers topped Staal in either gross or net score.
