Enoch's late goals lift Knights past Pirates

GRANTS PASS -- Ashley Enoch scored two goals in the final two minutes as North Valley defeated Phoenix 2-1 in District 6 girls soccer Thursday.

The Pirates led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Helen Shorland off an assist by Lindsey Holy.

It was a very evenly matched contest, North Valley coach Dick Matti said. We had a slight upper hand in the second half, but their goalkeeper (Tara Curtis) played a good game had several saves.

Matti said Phoenix's hustle prevented the Knights from playing their style of control ball until the second half.

North Valley was without keeper Carly Kruiswyk, who suffered a concussion in a match Saturday. Jill Mahannah took her place.

North Valley is a good team, Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer said. The kids played real strong. It was an exceptional effort from North Valley to get the win.

Sporrer praised the play of Curtis, Laura Jacobs and Jennifer Bones.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 2, ST. MARY'S 0 -- At Cave Junction, the Cougars scored a goal in each half.

Rachel Pierce scored on a breakaway on the first half and teammate Autumn Bell scored in the second half on another breakaway.

ROGUE RIVER 1, MAZAMA — -- At Klamath Falls, junior forward Casey Pete scored 15 minutes into the match on an assist from senior middle fielder Liz Lewis.

Mazama's Dena Young answered for the Vikings, converting on a penalty kick with fifteen minutes left in regulation.

Rogue River outshot Mazama 22-6.

District 6 boys

NORTH VALLEY 2, PHOENIX 0 -- At Talent, Jared Ratajzak scored both goals within 40 seconds of each other in the first half as the Knights dealt the Pirates their third straight District 6 defeat.

Phoenix outshot North Valley 11-7 and had a shot from 6 yards out with 10 minutes to play that sailed over the crossbar.

Junior center midfielder Jesse Shoreland and freshman halfback John Hendricks, appearing in his first varsity match, played well for the Pirates.

ST. MARY'S 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- Gabe Schonerd, Peter Staver and Zack Rote each scored a goal as St. Mary's lifted its record to 3-2.

The third goal of the contest came in the 44th minute when an Illinois Valley defender headed the ball into his own goal.

MAZAMA 4, ROGUE RIVER — -- At Rogue River, Brett McGregor had a hat trick to lead Mazama, which trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Rogue River scored in the second minute of the match with a goal from Mark Bradford off an assist by Tim Cotner.

McGregor scored in the 47th minute with an assist from Chad Glass to tie the match 1-1. In the 65th minute, McGregor broke the tie with a goal off an assist from Juan Delgadillo and gave the team a cushion in the 72nd minute with an assist from Tim Gruich.

Six minutes later, Delgadillo scored the final goal on an assist from Gruich.

Mazama outshot Rogue River 24-9.

HIDDEN VALLEY 9, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0 -- At Jacksonville, Matt Johnson and Ben Miljkovich each scored a pair of goals for Hidden Valley.

Hidden Valley led 8-0 at halftime.

Goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

Denny Palmer, Matt Johnson, Ben Jaramillo, Jesse Johnson and Kenny Pipher each had a goal for the Mustangs.

HENLEY 2, BONANZA 0 -- At Bonanza, junior forward Josh Ketchum had a goal and an assist for Henley.

Goalie Luke Stevens notched his third shutout of the season.

Junior center Dewey Pizinao opened the scoring with a goal in the 22nd minute on a pass from Ketchum.

With the victory Henley climbs to 3-0 in District 6 play.
