St. Mary's sweeps two from Gilchrist

Maren Zielony got off to a slow start in the volleyball season because of a strained knee.

But the St. Mary's junior outside hitter didn't show any ill effects from the injury Friday as the Crusaders swept a Southern Cascade League volleyball home doubleheader from Gilchrist.

St. Mary's defeated the Grizzlies 15-10, 15-7 in the opener, then prevailed in the second match, 12-15, 15-5, 15-4.

Zielony had a team-high 20 digs and 23 kills in the twin bill for the Class 2A fourth-ranked Crusaders (11-2, 5-0 SCL).

She's just playing fabulous volleyball for us right now, said St. Mary's coach James Joy. Defensively, she's our best passer. Almost everything that comes over the net she digs. On the front row, her vertical leap has improved and she's reaching really high and crushing the ball.

Junior defensive specialist Juliana de Sousa Solis gave the Crusaders a lift with her hustle.

She typically has pretty quiet, good games for us, said Joy.

St. Mary's sophomore setter Crystal Galedrige contributed to the victories with 46 assists. She was 101-of-112 on setting opportunities.

BONANZA SWEEPS CASCADE CHRISTIAN -- At Bonanza, the Antlers took the first match 15-7, 15-8 and won the second match of the twin bill 15-10, 15-12.

Bonanza's Sarah Wiseman had six kills and Brittanie Haskins 14 service points in the opener.

In the second match, the Antlers' Sarah Manning had six kills and Krista Nieraeth 10 service points.

PROSPECT 15-15, PAISLEY 10-12 -- At Paisley, Prospect remained one game behind Butte Falls in the loss column in the Skyline A Southern Division.
