Rodinsky powers SOU past Oregon Tech
ASHLAND -- Southern Oregon University's senior hitters sparkled in a 15-2, 15-9, 15-9 sweep of Oregon Tech Wednesday at McNeal Pavilion.
With the Cascade Conference volleyball win, the Raiders improved to 9-2 in conference and 15-4 overall.
Outside hitter Susan Rodinsky paced Southern Oregon with a match-high 16 kills, while middle blocker Nola Miller added a 14-kill, six-block effort.
Rodinsky, who amassed a .424 attack percentage, riddled the Owl defense early and often, converting her first five attempts in a 4-1 Raider spurt to open the first game. Two assisted blocks by Miller highlighted an 8-0 run that ended the opening stanza.
Southern trailed 6-4 in Game 2 when Rodinsky uncorked two service aces to tie the match, igniting a 9-0 Raider rush. SOU then took a 10-5 lead in Game — and fended off a late Oregon Tech rally by scoring the final four points of the match.
Oregon Tech (3-8, 9-15) was led by junior outside hitter Chastity Rees' 10 kills in 23 attempts (.391). Freshman setter Nohea Hirahara assisted 25 of Tech's 30 kills.
Southern, which converted nearly 30 percent of its kill attempts and won its sixth straight home match, also received solid efforts from right side hitter Michelle Cheshire (eight kills) and junior setter Erin Lytle (46 assists).
