Highlanders cruise past South, 3-0

EUGENE -- North Eugene got goals from three players and shut out South Medford 3-0 in non-conference girls soccer Wednesday.

We definitely had some opportunities early on in the first half, South Medford coach Leslie Lang said. In the second half we even put more pressure on their goalie.

South (8-4-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime, and the Highlanders would have had another goal if it wasn't for an outstanding defensive play by Ashley McCollum. The Panther midfielder cut off a shot headed toward an open net to keep the Panthers just one goal behind.

Jackie Rojas got North Eugene's first goal 14 minutes into the game. The Highlanders added second-half goals by Cassidy Temple and Tara McKenzie.

Marissa Gillingham was moved to sweeper for the Panthers when Kathleen Narus went out with a hip injury.

She (Gillingham) did a nice job controlling the defense and playing simple possession out of the back, said Lang.

The Panthers face North Medford in a showdown of undefeated Southern Oregon Conference teams Saturday at noon at District Field.
