Boxing Club wins 6-of-7 matches

Members of the Bulldog Boxing Club in Medford won 6-of-7 bouts Saturday at a match in Sweet Home.

Rooster Jackson, 16, won what was deemed the card's most outstanding bout with a decision over Marco Ashe in the 170-pound division.

In another top draw, Ricky Gallegos, 16, avenged two losses against Harland Ramos, earning a decision in the main event for his 16th win at 125 pounds.

In other Bulldog Boxing Club action, Ben Perez, 9, defeated Ronnie Mack of Burns in the 65-pound division; Troy Wohosky, 13, stopped Jonathan Leonard of Sweet Home in the second round at 106 pounds for his 15th win; Luis Pena, 21, stopped Rafael Ortiz

of Sweet Home in the third round at 140 pounds, earning his sixth knockout; Ricardo Gutierrez, 23, defeated Jeffrey Leonard at 170 pounds; Moises Rodriguez, 9, lost a 3-2 decision to Wade Marney of West Eugene at 70 pounds.

In coming action, The Bulldog Boxing Club will be playing host to the Northwest Classic Nov. 7 at Seven Feathers in Canyonville.

karate students shine at Mabuni Cup

The eight International Karate Federation students from Grants Pass participating in the 1998 Mabuni Cup combined to win a total of seven gold, four silver and five bronze medals Saturday at Edmonds Community College.

Advanced student Tony Mendonca earned two gold and two bronze medals, while advanced student Rumi Tajalle earned two gold and one silver awards.

Intermediate student Tommy Powers won two gold medals, with intermediate student Laurie Thuemler earning a silver and bronze medal. Intermediate student Kim Straw capped the list of multiple winners with two bronze medals.

Advanced student Yoshi Iwama and beginner Jason Arbour each won a silver medal, while advanced student Damion Ponce continued his run toward the Junior World Cup by earning a gold medal.

Karate athletes in the Rogue Valley who wish to compete in events sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) should contact the USA Karate Training Center in Medford at 858-8908 or call the Oregon AAU office in Grants Pass at 479-5171.

Local Club meets noon today at North's

The Southern Oregon Duck Club meets at noon today at J.J. North's Grand Buffet, 1016 N. Riverside, Medford.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford will be interviewed via conference call.

Saturday's win over Southern California will be reviewed and the upcoming Pac-10 contest against Arizona will be previewed.
