Pirates tie RR, blast Hornets

Prep wrestling

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Pirates needed a fall from heavyweight Dan McLaren to earn a tie against upstart Rogue River during a Skyline Conference wrestling match on Thursday night.

McLaren made good on his mission, slamming the Chiefs' Brandon Glasscock to the mat in one minute and three seconds, enabling the young Pirates to walk off with a 36-36 tie.

Earlier, the Pirates coasted to a 54-12 victory over short-handed Henley. Rogue River defeated the Hornets 63-16 in the three-way dual meet.

McLaren came through in a big way for us and that's not surprising because he's one of our better kids, Phoenix coach Harry Mondale said. We had to have the pin and he didn't waste much time in getting it.

The Pirates, who have seven freshmen in their lineup, got the best of the Chieftains in six of 11 matches contested. But they had to forfeit the 189- and 215-pound matches.

Against Henley, Brandon Sousa (103), Kyle Kaufman (119), Brandon Pederson (125), Mark Williams (135), Chris Silva (171) and McLaren all registered falls.

Henley's two best wrestlers, Matt Langhorn (112) and David St. Martin (189), sat out the match with ailments. Each is No. — in the state Class 3A rankings.

Pedersen, one of the Pirates' standout freshman, earned an exciting 16-12 victory over Rogue River's Chris Smith.
