PREP BASKETBALL

Challengers handle HV

MURPHY -- Loren King staged a triumphant return to Hidden Valley High Thursday night as his Cascade Christian girls basketball team rolled to a season-opening 62-38 victory.

From 1980 to 1993, King coached girls basketball at Hidden Valley. It was a member of both the Southern Oregon Conference and the Skyline Conference during his stint.

King's Class 2A Challengers showed little awe for their opponent with an enrollment more than double Cascade's.

We've done OK against 3A schools, King said. During the summer, we'd play North or South (Medford), anybody that would get on the court with us.

Sophomore Kelly Clarke, a transfer from Thurston, paced four girls in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Natalie Peck added 10 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds.

That was a great way for Natalie to start, King said. That was probably her most balanced game ever.

Crystal Tait scored all 11 of her points in the first half as the Challengers built a 36-16 advantage. She also dished out five assists.

Christina McCandless chipped in with 11 points.

We finally got everybody believing in defense, said King, whose team had noticeable defensive letdowns en route to a 16-10 record last year.

Cascade spoiled Hidden Valley coach Randy Gelter's debut.

It's a new system and the kids haven't played together, King said. Plus they lost all of their starters from last year.

Emily Lenahan led the Mustangs with 11 points.
