Guy leads SOU to victory

ASHLAND -- Junior point guard Don Guy scored a career-high 21 points in his first start of the season as the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team won four straight games for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

With Guy starting in place of the injured Jacques Francis, the Raiders downed Northwest College 77-74 in Cascade Conference play Saturday night at McNeal Pavilion.

Guy, a first-year player from Eielson, Alaska, made 9 of 11 shots from the floor and had five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

He's been waiting for his chance all year, said Raiders coach Brian McDermott. He distributed, he took care of the ball and he outplayed their point guard.

Francis sat out with a sprained right knee, an injury he suffered in Friday night's win. McDermott said his status is day-to-day.

The winning streak comes at the end of a six-game home stand. The Raiders (11-12, 5-4 Cascade) play seven of their final nine games on the road.

We were kind of hoping that could happen, McDermott said of the streak. We had a big home stand we kind of felt like we could getting it going and have a little momentum for the road trip.

Southern Oregon led by 12 with 4:35 to play before Northwest made a run. Reserve Raider center Scott Logue blocked Corey Symons' last-second 3-point attempt to seal the win.

Logue, a Grants Pass High graduate, came off the bench to score 11 points. Reserve Dave Arbow had 13 and Chris Schmerbach added 12.
