Raider roundup

Senior duo lead SOU past Warriors

ASHLAND -- Denise Berry posted a game-high 24 points to help the second-ranked Southern Oregon University women's basketball team to a 70-58 victory over Western Baptist and the championship at the Southern Oregon Classic on Saturday at McNeal Pavilion.

Berry, who was 10-of-19 from the field, also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as the Raiders improved to 8-1 on the season.

She (Berry) just stepped up and played an excellent game tonight, Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett said. When Nada (Janackovic) and her are in the game the defenses shift back and forth and tonight they were very worried about Nada.

Janackovic, along with Berry, were the only Southern Oregon players to reach double figures. Janackovic tallied 17 points.

I think we need some contribution from other players, said Huyett. For the most part we're getting contributions from them, but just not in the scoring column.

One of those contributions was from Tiwana Merritt, who tallied seven assists and six rebounds.

In the first half, Southern Oregon raced to a 43-31 halftime advantage, playing perhaps its best basketball of the season.

I was really happy with the way we came out, said Huyett. We just played extremely well for about the first 17 minutes. We looked pretty invincible for a while, but we just couldn't quite put them away.

Western Baptist (4-5) was paced by Christy Hansen's 21 points and Cassee Steed's 13 points and 12 rebounds.
