Gonzalez headlines Saturday fight card
Manuel Gonzalez of the Rogue Valley Cougars Boxing Club will be one of 12 Cougars to fight on a Saturday night card at Eagle Point High.
Action starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Eagle Point gym.
Gonzalez is the 1998 Silver Gloves state champion in the age 10-and-under division. He's also a defending Oregon Junior Olympics champion and has an 18-match winning streak.
Ten other Cougars, who have won state titles in Oregon and Nevada, will fight on Saturday. They are Homero Gonzalez, Manuel Ibarra, Cris Almaraz, Juan Almaraz, Junior Rios, Dennis Clifford, Omar Ibarra, Danny Ibarra, Alex Ibarra and Pancho Esqueda.

Ashland boosters plan bus trips to title game
The Ashland Booster Club is organizing trips on rooter buses for Saturday's state championship football game against Roseburg.
The buses will leave Ashland High at 7:30 a.m. and return to the high school at approximately 7 p.m. following the game.
Cost to ride a bus will be $20 for adults and $10 for students. For more information, call Bob Jones at 488-2439.
Maukonen makes all-academic team
Senior Jona Maukonen of Medford has been named to the Pac-10 Conference All-Academic team.
Maukonen, a senior midfielder in women's soccer for Oregon State, was a first-team selection. She has a 3.64 grade-point average.
Coray Calhoun of Jacksonville was also named to the second team. Calhoun is a graduate of Niceville High School in Niceville, Fla.
Maukonen scored eight points for Oregon State in 1998, on three goals and two assists.
Maukonen and Lindy Brown, Oregon State's two soccer co-captains, were both selected to the first team.
