Crater standout wins award at Dartmouth

Former Crater High football player Kyle Rogers has been named winner of the Lester R. Godwin Award as the Dartmouth College player who overcame personal disadvantage to significantly help the school's football team.

Rogers, who played with several injuries during his career at Dartmouth, finished the season with 72 tackles, including a team-leading four sacks. He ranked fourth on the team in total tackles.

4A title game tickets still on sale

ASHLAND -- Tickets for the 1998 OSAA Class 4A state football championship between Ashland and Roseburg went on sale Wednesday.

About 1,000 tickets were made available for sale in the lobby of Ashland High School's large gymnasium.

Reserved seats for the Ashland section are $9. General admission seats for the game are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

Tickets will go on sale at the gate at Autzen Stadium in Eugene beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Ashland Booster Club is organizing rooter buses. Departure from Ashland High will be at 7:30 a.m. and return to the high school at 7 p.m. The trip will allow time for pre- and post-game activities.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of the rooter buses should sign-up at the high school's office by noon Friday. The cost is $10 for students and $20 for adults.

earns spot in LaVerne Hall of Fame

Anthony Scafani of Medford has been named to the University of LaVerne Athletic Hall of Fame.

Induction ceremonies will be held on Feb. 20 in LaVerne, Calif.

Scafani was a football and baseball player for La Verne in 1937 and '38.

In 1938, he was captain of the football team and started as a running back and defensive back.

Babe Ruth board meets tonight

The Ashland Babe Ruth League Board of Directors will meet tonight at 7 p.m., at Hunter Park. Parents are encouraged to attend.

Former St. star leads Vassar to ninth

Former St. Mary's High runner Brooke Densmore helped Vassar College's women's cross country team to ninth place in the NCAA East Regional championships this fall. It was the fourth time Vassar has placed in the top 10 in the regional.
