Balanced South Medford routs North Eugene

South Medford bounced back from a one-sided loss to South Eugene to pound visiting North Eugene, 70-49, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference boys basketball game.

We came out and competed a lot harder and played smarter, South Medford coach Dennis Murphy said. We got much better play out of some of the kids. We weren't intimidated like Friday night.

Steve Hilgendorf led a balanced South Medford attack with 13 points, 11 assists and no turnovers.

South had just two turnovers in the first half and eight for the game.

Damian Rasmussen scored 12 points, hitting all four free-throw attempts, and added three assists. Nick Decker also contributed 12 points, nailing 6-of-8 field goal attempts, and snared seven rebounds to help the Panthers to a 33-19 advantage on the backboards.

Ethan Wallenberg, off to a late start because of an eye socket injury suffered against North Medford during soccer season, chipped in 10 points. The 6-foot-4 junior post connected on 5-of-6 field goal attempts and grabbed three rebounds.

Graham Foster aided the Panthers with 10 points and seven rebounds.

South (2-2) continues its non-conference schedule Thursday in an eight-team tournament at Red Bluff, Calif.
