BOYS BASKETBALL

Murphy leads Phoenix boys' resurgence

PHOENIX -- With their backs to the wall, the Phoenix boys came out swinging Tuesday night as the Pirates rallied for a 57-55 non-conference victory over Glide.

Phoenix (2-5) trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, only to rally behind sophomore point guard Sean Murphy in the second half to gain the narrow decision.

Murphy drilled back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter to bring Phoenix back into contention, and did a nice job of distributing the ball throughout the contest.

He really stepped up tonight, said Phoenix coach Randy Shipley, adding that Murphy had six assists and only one turnover.

Phoenix boasted a balanced scoring attack, with Andy Bartels leading the charge with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Murphy, Gabe Willard, Landon Rhodes and Ben Grigsby each added nine points for the Pirates, who outscored Glide 39-26 in the second half after a woeful first half.

They threw some gimmick defenses at us and we didn't do a good job adjusting to it and shot very poorly in the first half, said Shipley.

We had the same shots in the first half as we did in the second half, we just didn't make them.
