Marshfield edges scrappy Comets, 48-46

COOS BAY -- Crater coach Matt Meunier wasn't terribly disappointed with the Comets' 48-46 road loss to Marshfield on Friday night.

Matt Brown's 3-point attempt from the right wing with 20 seconds remaining in the game went in and out of the basket and ended the Comets' hopes of sending the contest into overtime.

It was our best effort defensively by far and we won the rebound battle 33-32, said Meunier. This was the best team we've played so far. They're extremely athletic.

The Comets (2-3) were ahead most of the game, but the Pirates took a four-point advantage with about four minutes to go in the fourth quarter and never relinquished the lead.

Every shot they took, we challenged, said Meunier. And we got to the glass and controlled the boards. They were one shot and out in the first half.

Crater led 24-20 at halftime and took a two-point margin into the fourth quarter.

Senior forward Mike Jacobs paced Crater with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while 6-foot-7 post Matt Harthun contributed five points and 11 rebounds.

Levi Westgaard led Marshfield with 15 points.

Crater hosts the four-team Airport Chevrolet Shootout Tuesday and Wednesday. Other teams in the two-day tournament are Eagle Point, Phoenix and North Bend.
