Cougars claw past Rogue River

Stolman keys Illinois Valley

CAVE JUNCTION -- Illinois Valley used a big second-half comeback to avoid finishing last in its own holiday tournament Saturday.

Brian Stolman collected 10 points and 10 rebounds as Illinois Valley fought back from a 15-point first-half deficit to edge Rogue River 59-55 for third place in the Illinois Valley Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The Cougars, who were missing starting guards Orly Despacio (broken ankle) and Ry Heller (flu), trailed 35-28 at halftime and 47-37 after three periods before storming back.

Ben Moses and Dustin Keitges added nine points each and 6-foot-2, 220-pound sophomore Brandon Henry had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars, who improved their season record to 5-4.

For Rogue River (3-4), senior point guard Kevin McMillian had 20 points and seven steals.

MERRILL WEST 57, ASHLAND 45 -- At Tracy, Calif., Brett Zundel was selected to the all-tournament team after Ashland lost to Merrill West in the third-fourth-place game of the Tracy Tournament.

Zundel led the Grizzlies (4-4) with 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Marco Kalemkeris added eight points and 10 rebounds.

HENLEY 64, KLAMATH UNION 51 -- At Klamath Falls, Tim Frost came close to recording a triple-double for Henley (4-1 overall) with 17 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Michael Nenes added 10 points and a team-high six steals for the Hornets.

The Pelicans slipped to 0-5.

McNulty was selected to the all-tournament team as the Crusaders improved to 3-3 on the season.

Milojevich also collected 14 rebounds.

Dusty Harrington scored 14 points for the Loggers, who fell to 1-4.
