Crater trips Eagle Point to win Airport Shootout

CENTRAL POINT -- Mike Jacobs is Mr. Steady for the Crater Comets.

Jacobs provided that dimension again Wednesday in the finals of the Airport Chevrolet Shootout boys basketball tournament against Eagle Point.

For the second straight year, the Comets defeated Eagle Point in the championship game of the two-year-old event.

Crater capitalized on a big disparity from the free-throw line and defeated the Eagles in overtime, 66-60.

The Comets hit 7-of-8 from the foul line in the extra period, outscoring the Eagles 9-3.

We defended well in overtime, Crater coach Matt Meunier said. We forced a couple of tough shots and created some turnovers. We put ourselves in a position where they had to foul us. We hit the free throws and won the game.

For the game, Crater was 20-of-30 from the foul stripe, while Eagle Point connected on three of its four chances.

Jacobs led the Comets with 19 points and 10 rebounds in addition to five assists. The 6-foot-4 forward was 7-of-13 from the field.

Crater senior Jason Korthals had an effective game with eight assists and five steals to accompany seven points.

The Eagles started fast by grabbing a 24-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Comets cut the margin to five (39-34) at halftime.

Phil Garrett paced the Eagles with 21 points.

Eagle Point earlier crushed Phoenix 70-37 behind John Lucas' 24 points to advance to the championship match.

The tournament was reduced to three teams after North Bend did not make the trip because of hazardous road conditions.
