Eagle Point advances to championship tilt of Ketchikan tourney

KETCHIKAN, Ala. -- Phil Garrett recorded a double-double for Eagle Point as the Eagles held on for a 69-63 victory over Lathrop of Fairbanks, Ala., in the semifinal round of the Ketchikan Invitational boys basketball tournament on Tuesday.

Chris Sawyer added 10 points and a team-high seven assists to help advance Eagle Point into today's championship game against the winner of the Horizon-Ketchikan semifinal.

Eagle Point coach Keith Williams said the Horizon team, out of San Diego, would pose the biggest challenge to the Eagles.

Tuesday night the Eagles trailed at halftime, 33-31, before taking the lead for good in the third quarter on a 16-7 run.

(In the second half) they got to within four points, Williams said. We let them get closer than we liked, but we never gave back the lead.

He said the Eagles have been stepping up and playing very well during the tournament.

Lathrop had good size and very talented kids, Williams said. They're very athletic, but we played real well defensively.

Kyle Bailey led Lathrop with 24 points.
