N. Medford rebounds, takes third

North Medford's boys basketball team showed amazing composure Wednesday night against Century of Hillsboro.

Instead of hanging their heads following a bitter 59-57 loss to McMinnville the night before, the Black Tornado regrouped and mustered a 50-47 overtime win to claim third in the Abby's Legendary Pizza Holiday Basketball Classic.

Shrugging off the controversial ending of the McMinnville matchup, North Medford clawed its way into the third spot thanks to a strong effort from senior Jeff Zimmer, who led North with 17 points. Three of those points dropped in at just the right time as the 6-foot guard calmly flushed a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 40-all with 1:10 remaining in regulation.

Both teams had a chance to win in the final minute, but neither could hit its mark.

The overtime period proved to be all North Medford as the Black Tornado notched 10 points and then held on as Ryan Hepp's 17-foot jumper rimmed out in the waning seconds.

Senior Travis Hinkle chipped in nine to lift North (5-3), while seniors Dave Husel, Brian Schlief and Kelly Jantzer each added six points.

Mike Albertson paced Century (4-3) with a game-high 26 points.

North coach Gene Quilhaugh said the thrilling victory was tempered, however, with Wednesday's news that junior guard Wes Towne will be lost for the season. The 6-2 guard suffered a broken bone in his left elbow during the first game of the tournament against Oregon City.

A win on the third day of a three-day tournament is significant, but I just lost one of my starters for the year so I have mixed feelings, the first-year coach said.

In Towne's absence, however, several players have stepped up to carry the load -- especially Zimmer.

Zimmer had another nice night, finishing with a two-day total of 45 points and 13 rebounds, Quilhaugh said.

The coach said North's ability to adapt to Century's defensive schemes proved to be the difference in Wednesday's outcome.

Century played a lot of one-on-one in the second half but we tried to stick to our team concept and that helped in the end, he said.
