Illinois Valley sweeps Pirates

Prep softball roundup

TALENT -- Needing at least a split and ideally a sweep, the Phoenix softball team earned neither Saturday as Illinois Valley swept the important Skyline Conference doubleheader.

Both teams entered the contests tied for second in the Skyline standings at 10-5, but the Cougars won by scores of 5-1 and 7-5 Saturday.

We could have had either one of these games -- it was the same thing that happened at Mazama. We just stranded too many people on base, Phoenix coach Rich Ficek said. That one could possibly knock us off from at least making the playoffs.

Phoenix dropped to 11-10 overall and 10-7 in Skyline play, with Lakeview, Henley and North Valley remaining on the schedule.

Justine Johnson had nine strikeouts and one walk in lifting Illinois Valley (14-7, 12-5 Skyline) in the opener. Emily Hoskins had three hits and three RBIs in the nightcap for the Cougars.

Michelle McEvoy went 4-for-4 to pace Phoenix in the second game.
