advances in Golden Gloves boxing

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Cris Almaraz impressively cleared his first hurdle Tuesday at the National Golden Gloves Boxing Championships.

Almaraz, 17, of the White City Cougars Boxing Club, defeated Alex Alarcon of Knoxville, Tenn., with a unanimous three-round decision in a 112-pound division opening-round bout.

Almaraz is representing Region 12, which consists of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Nevada and Arizona, in the national boxing competition for 17 to 34-year-olds. The Eagle Point High sophomore is only one of two boxers from Oregon in the competition.

Almaraz will face Michael Oliver in a second-round bout today.

makes cut in second straight tourney

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Tara Staal of Medford made her second straight cut Tuesday in a professional Players West Golf Tour event.

Staal is tied with three others for 24th place in the Woodhaven Women's Golf Classic.

Staal is 13 over par after rounds of 79 and 74 on the par-70 Woodhaven Country Club.

Kathy Choi of Los Angeles leads the event with a 4-under-par 136.

The 54-hole tournament concludes today.

New Oregon State football coach Dennis Erickson will visit Medford on Wednesday for a full day of activities, including playing in the Beaver Club golf tournament at StoneRidge Golf Course.

In addition to Erickson, OSU President Paul Risser and women's basketball coach Judy Spoelstra will play golf.

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. Cost is $65 per person for the scramble format. An alumni dinner will be at 7 p.m. at the Jackson County Expo.

senior golf tournament is Monday

A super senior individual stroke play tournament will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at StoneRidge Golf Course.

The entry fee is $35 and includes lunch. Players must be 60 or older to compete.

Classic set for June 6 at StoneRidge

The Colts Classic, four-person scramble golf tournament, will take place June 6 at StoneRidge Golf Course.

The entry fee is $45 per person. The tournament is limited to 36 teams. Proceeds help support the South Medford Colts American Legion A baseball team.

clinic boasts Pacific volleyball coach

A volleyball coaching clinic featuring University of the Pacific's John Dunning is scheduled Saturday at North Medford High.

The clinic is designed for junior high and senior high coaches with a wide range of topics covered.

The cost of the 8 a.m. to — p.m. clinic is $75, including a notebook and lunch.
