Cascade splits with Lost River

MERRILL -- Tim Alvarez pitched a four-hitter and Andy Bellamy homered as Cascade Christian defeated Lost River 6-2 in the second game of a Southern Cascade League doubeheader showdown against Lost River here Friday.

The host Raiders rallied from a 5-2 deficit to pull out a 6-5, extra-inning win in the opener.

The twin bill, played in bone-chilling weather that periodically turned to hail and snow showers, ended the regular season and left both teams with 11-1 league records. They'll meet a third time next Friday at either Eagle Point or Butte Falls to decide the No. — state playoff berth.

Mario Rayas, who hit a solo homer in the sixth, drilled an RBI single in the eighth inning to win the first game for the Raiders.

Alvarez clubbed a two-run homer in the opener and finished 2-for-3 with two walks.

In Game 2, singles by Alvarez, Nolan Roberts and Brian Edwards enabled Cascade Christian -- the No. 2-ranked Class 2A team in the state -- to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Lost River's Justin Guthrie homered in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1, but the 6-foot-41/2, 220-pound Alvarez settled down and allowed only one run and three hits the rest of the way.

Alvarez, who came on in relief in the first game and suffered his first loss of the season, finished with five strikeouts and no walks in the nightcap, improving his record to 7-1.

She then attempted to steal second base and ended up scoring after the throw down to second base got through both the shortstop and the center fielder. However, the throw should not have been made because Riddle had just given up a walk and Brophy would have had second base, anyway.
