Schaan chosen as Tornado mat coach
Mike Schaan has been named the new wrestling coach at North Medford High School.
We're real excited to have Mike take over our program, North Medford athletic director Mike Kay said. With Mike, I think we'll be competitive with some of the strongest wrestling programs in the state.
He praised Schaan's ability to work with kids and the job Schaan did as an assistant coach with the North Medford football team last fall.
Schaan takes over for Ken Thompson.
Schaan is already looking forward to next year's wrestling season.
Our main goal is to come in and be as competitive as we can, Schaan said. Our main focus will be to come out week by week, be extremely competitive and get better each week.
Schaan will have plenty of experience to work with next season as the Black Tornado returns eight seniors and a handful of juniors.
There are not a lot of freshmen, so we will be recruiting the underclassmen into the program next year, Schaan said.
Before taking the North Medford coaching job, Schaan served as the head wrestling coach for Klamath Union for five years and assisted for one year.
He also helped out with the football program and coached three years as the throws coach for the Oregon Institute of Technology track and field team.
Schaan was a three-sport athlete for Roseburg High and played football and competed on the track team for Southern Oregon University for four years. He also wrestled for one season.
While at Southern Oregon, Schaan qualified for nationals in both the hammer throw and discus and was selected as an all-conference lineman in football for two seasons.
A new challenge now awaits.
With the student body at North, we will have the ability to create a very solid program, Schaan said. It is a privilege to be a part of North Medford athletics.
