Kinney takes sixth at state tourney

PREP GOLF

AURORA -- Tai Kinney captured sixth place with a 158 two-day total at the Class 4A state golf tournament at Langdon Farms Golf Course.

Kinney posted a 76 in the final round, cutting four strokes off her Monday total.

Allison Hanna of David Douglas and West Albany's Kim Byers captured first place with 154 totals.

Grants Pass' Johnna Nealy, who battled Kinney all season, shot a 78 in the second round to finish the tournament with a 165, two strokes shy of 10th place.

Julie Baylis led Roseburg, which finished 13th as a team, with a 178 total.

South Medford's Abby Fowler finished the tournament with a 183 total.

Class 4A Boys

ASHLAND TAKES EIGHTH --Adam Hooper shot a 3-over-par 75 at Trysting Tree Golf Course as Ashland High moved up a notch to finish eighth at the Class 4A state tournament.

South Eugene won the title with a total of 603, edging Canby and Sprague by two shots.

For the Grizzlies, Pete Kirkpatrick and Kyle Allred backed up Hopper with 78s and Kyle Oldfield carded a 79. Ashland totaled 627 shots.

Class 3A Boys

HIDDEN VALLEY FINISHES 12th -- At Redmond, Hidden Valley's Derek Horning fired a second-round 76 for a 158 total to lead the Mustangs to a 12th place overall finish in the 3A State Tournament.

Junction City finished first in the team standings with a 622, while Taft was second with a 634.

There was a three-way tie for first-place in the individual scoring with Junction City's Brandon Richardson and Dustin Degroot and Scappoose's Ian Hagen leading the way with 150s.

Horning finished the tournament in 18th place, while teammate Steve Ewan, who had a 159, finished 21st.

ST. MARY'S IN TOP 10 -- At Redmond, St. Mary's Alex Duncan placed second in the 2A-1A boys state tournament with a two-round tally of 158 to help his team to a fourth-place finish.

Enterprise took top honors with a 666 total.

Matt Ballou of Portland Adventist took first place in individual scores by shooting 81 in the first round and 75 in the second for a 156 total.

COPE TIES FOR FIFTH --A Redmond, Hidden Valley's Jodi Cope shot a final round 93 to tie for fifth place at the Class 3A-2A-1A girls state tournament at Eagle Ridge Golf Course.

Marist beat runner-up Molalla by 10 strokes in the team title chase. Henley finished in fifth place.

Katie Johnson of St. Mary's tied for 13th individually with a 183 and the Crusaders were seventh as a team with a 390.
