Drew captures state bowling tournament

Samantha Drew of Ashland cashed in during the 1999 Coca Cola State Scholarship Bowling Tournament April 24-25 in McMinnville.

Drew, 15, captured the girls 12-and-up handicap division and won a $250 scholarship. She will represent Oregon in the Coca Cola national tournament Aug. 15 in Salt Lake City and will have an opportunity to win a $5,000 scholarship.

Drew, a 118-average bowler, bowled a 172 average for a six-game series on the last day. Her handicap total in the finals was 1,475.

Amber Rennick of Medford and Jennifer Sealy of Central Point also won scholarships in the girls 12-and-up handicap division.

Rennick, 13, bowled her first 200 in the tournament and finished third with a 1,346 handicap total. The McLoughlin Middle School eighth-grader won a $150 scholarship.

Sealy placed fifth with a score of 1,305 and won a $120 scholarship. Sealy, who carries a 137 average, posted a 161 average in the tournament.

In the boys 12-and-up handicap division, four local bowlers won scholarship money.

Cory Scales of Central Point had the top effort with a third-place finish ($250). Adam Korth of Central Point placed sixth ($180), Brandon Bogart of Medford seventh ($162.50) and Blake Daniels of Central Point 10th ($110).
