Newmann powers four homers for North Jackson

GLENDALE -- Nick Newmann went 5-for-5 with four home runs for North Jackson (3-3) during their 16-3 romp over South County in the opening game of an American Legion doubleheader.

South County won the nightcap 7-4.

Newmann doubled home a run in his first at-bat before blasting three consecutive solo shots. His final turn at the plate resulted in a threerun home run, giving him seven RBIs for the game while putting the finishing touches on the six-inning rout.

Teammate Evan Pogue went 3-for-4 with a home run while Justin Whisenhunt, Jake Kleker and Charlie Jackson each contributed two hits for North Jackson to compliment Brian Strodthoff's complete game three hit performance on the mound.

Kleker and Jackson led the Royals in the nightcap, each going 3-for-3 in a losing effort.

EUGENE EAST 7-0, SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 5-2 -- Josh Tompkins pitched a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as South Medford (1-1) salvaged an American Legion A doubleheader split at home.

Tompkins (1-0) struck out five and walked two.

The Colts scored their first run in the second inning when Matt Skundrick opened with a walk, advanced to second on a ground out, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error on Clint Rodreick's grounder.

South got an insurance run in the fourth when Rodreick singled and was brought home by David Thrapp's two-out triple.

Skundrick, who led the Colts with two hits in each game, had three RBIs in the opener.
