Mustangs top Redding; Mavs sweep

The Medford Mustangs cruised past the Redding Tigers, 8-4 and 16-5, with a twinbill sweep in Sunday's American Legion baseball action.

The Mustangs (8-1) will open up their league season today on the road with a doubleheader against the Grants Pass Nuggets at 6 p.m. at the All Sports Park.

In Sunday's first game, Phil Ouellette led the Mustangs with a 3-for-4 performance, while Colby Gonzales was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Nate Mayben was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jason Brownell chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance while scoring twice.

Graham Foster, who had a shutout going until the sixth inning of the first game, picked up his second win on the mound, while Mike Beers tallied his second save.

In the second game, the Mustangs scored 16 runs to take care of the Tigers in five innings.

The Mustangs' Brent Foster, who scored four runs, led the attack with a 2-for-2 effort, including a home run and two RBIs. Chuck Shine also tallied a 2-for-2 performance, while scoring two runs.

Nate Mayben and Gonzales each finished with two hits in the game. Gonzales scored twice and had two RBIs, while Mayben scored once and had four RBIs.

NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 5-14, KLAMATH FALLS HAWKS 2-11 -- At Klamath Falls, the Mavericks picked up two wins, capping off the second game by scoring seven runs in the eighth inning.

Dan Bruce led the Mavericks in the first game with a 2-for-4 effort and two runs scored, while Don Jenkins also chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance.

Ramon Cortez led North Medford in the second game, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Bruce was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Travis Poulton, who was hit by a pitch four times, was a terror on the bases as he tallied five steals in the game.

The Mavericks (3-2, 2-0 league) play host to Dave's Creek Wednesday at 2 p.m.
