Mavs, Horizon trade wins
The North Medford Mavericks held Roseburg to a single hit in the first game for an 8-1 win, but couldn't register the sweep as the Horizon came back in the second game to score nine runs for the 9-3 non-league victory.
North Medford (2-0 league, 5-4 overall), faces the South Medford Colts today at — p.m. in a doubleheader at South Medford High.
In the first game, freshman-to-be Brett Timmerman picked up his first victory in his first start, holding Roseburg to one hit through six innings. Roseburg's Brandon Young tallied the Horizon's only hit in the third inning.
Don Jenkins led the Mavericks in the first game with a 3-for-3 performance, while Evan McArthur was 3-for-4 on the day. Dan Bruce, Ramon Cortez and Devon Zupan all had two hits for North Medford.
In the second game, Roseburg's Jermiah Hunt was unstoppable at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles to help Roseburg spoil North Medford's shot a sweep. Kyle Bachmeier and Mike Olsen chipped in with two hits apiece for Roseburg.
Zupan led the Mavericks in the second game going 3-for-3, while McArthur tallied two hits.

BLACK TORNADO INVITATIONAL -- North Medford and the Oregon Phillies kicked off the Black Tornado Invitational 18-under girls softball tournament at Fagone Field with wins.
In the first game the Black Tornado tallied seven hits and five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 11-10 victory over the South Medford Blue Aces.
Haley Barley led the attack for North with three hits in four at-bats and two RBIs. Teammates Brandi Paxton and Sandi Horn each chipped in with two hits.
Lindsey Hale went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Blue Aces.
In the second game, the Oregon Phillies routed the Crater Stars 10-2 in five innings behind two hits apiece from Steph Adams and Erin Glantz.
Teammate Gracie Rowland-Dunn added one hit in as many at-bats with two RBIs.
The Phillies are comprised of players mainly from the Southern Oregon Conference with the exception of a few other players from around the state.
Tournament action continues today starting at 11 a.m. at Fagone and Jackson fields. The final game of the day is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m.
