Fillies face Black Tornado in semi-finals
The Oregon Fillies picked up two wins Saturday behind strong pitching and advanced into today's semifinal round of the Black Tornado Softball Invitational at Fagone and Jackson fields.
The Fillies will face the North Medford Black Tornado in semi-final action at 10 a.m. at Fagone Field, with the winner advancing to the championship game at Fagone Field at noon. The third-place game will take place at Jackson Field at noon.
In the other semi-final game, the Redding Renegades will face Portland Strictly Softball in a 10 a.m. contest at Jackson Field.
The Fillies held their opponents to five hits and posted a shutout victory in each of the games. Stephanie Coe pitched four solid innings for the Fillies in the second game, striking out seven with no walks. Kaitlin Wilson fanned five in the first game, allowing two hits in four innings of work. Kathy Bielemeyer pitched a combined six innings in the two games, allowing no runs and only one hit with six strikeouts.
In the first game, the Fillies jumped on the Redding Renegades with two runs in the first inning and then coasted from there for a 10-0 victory. Steph Adams, who scored two runs, led the Fillies with three stolen bases and two RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort. Megumi Hackett chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance with three runs and three stolen bases.
In the second game, the Fillies cruised past the Bend Stealers, 5-0, behind 11 hits. Hackett, who had three stolen bases, paced the Fillies' attack by going 4-for-4 with three runs. Erin Glantz and Missy Coe each added two hits and an RBI.

BLACK TORNADO GETS SPLIT -- North Medford bounced back with a 7-2 win over the Klamath Falls Gems after suffering a 6-1 loss to Portland's Strickly Softball in the Black Tornado Invitational at Fagone and Jackson Fields.
Strictly Softball shut down the Black Tornado in the first game, allowing only four hits and a run in the sixth inning. Mandy Ott led Portland with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
In the second game against Klamath Falls, North Medford came alive with seven runs on eight hits.
Brittney Hillyer led North in the second game, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sandy Horn and Jill Carrigan each chipped in with two hits.
Amanda Cregan picked up the win on the mound for the Black Tornado in the second game, allowing four hits with five strike-outs.

SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 6-3, NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 5-2 -- Clutch hitting helped the South Medford Colts earn the American Legion baseball sweep as the Colts won both games in their last at-bat at South Medford High.
South Medford (6-2 overall, 4-0 league) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie North Medford at 4-4 in the opener. Neither team could score in the seventh, but the Mavericks crossed the plate once in the eighth to take the lead. Undaunted, the Colts rallied for two runs in the final frame to steal the victory.
Jon McCollum drilled a leadoff double in the eighth, followed by a Jason Kruggel single and an RBI groundout by Zack Jackson. With the game tied, Matt Smith singled and David Thrapp was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cory Sweet followed with a grounder to the shortstop that was bobbled, allowing Jackson to score the winning run.
North Medford (5-6, 2-2) led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap, only to have the Colts rally again thanks to an RBI single by Kruggel and another game-winning effort by Sweet.

PHOENIX 13-23, GRANTS PASS 1-3 -- At Grants Pass, Phoenix scored 36 runs on 29 hits to record the sweep in Senior Babe Ruth twinball action at the All Sports Park.
Kyle Kaufman led Phoenix (5-1) in the first game, going 2-for-3 with a home run, while Dave Westfall, who had four RBIs, Theron Hull and Andy Bartels all registered two hits.
In the second game, Phoenix scored 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Travis Dunlap put up big numbers for Phoenix in the second game, going 4-for-4 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. Westfall, who had five RBIs, and Bartels each went 3-for-4, while Hull chipped in two hits.
Phoenix registered two grand slams in the second game, one by Dunlap in the third inning and one by Westfall in the fifth inning.
