Wharry places first in wrestling tourney
South Medford High wrestling coach Ken Wharry captured first place at the Veterans National Championships held in Seattle on Sunday.
Wharry wrestled against eight other competitors in the age 35-40, 76 kilo division under Club West.
The 35-year-old former national champion at Southern Oregon University made quick work of his first round foe with a technical fall, 12-0, at 1:10.
After pinning his next opponent in the second match, Wharry defeated Clay Holly, 11-2, to claim the title and qualify for the Veterans World Championships in Budapest, Romania on September 2.

Zielony qualifies for regional in heptathlon
MONMOUTH -- Sophomore Kristen Zielony of St. Mary's High finished fourth out of 10 competitors in the heptathlon event at the USATF Junior Olympic State Championships.
Zielony totalled 3,121 points in the seven events required in the age 15-16 girls division to qualify her for the Regional Championships held in Washington in July.
The top five finishers in each division automatically qualify for the regionals.
Local cow horse derby scheduled July 6-10
The National Reined Cow Horse Association will host the River Front Farms Derby July 6-10 at Isola Arena in the Jackson County Expo Center in Medford.
The 4 and 5-year-old Reined Cow horses will compete in a snaffle bit. The estimated purse is $200,000.
