Mayben fuels Mustangs' win
SALEM -- Nate Mayben did more than keep his 18-game hitting streak alive as the Medford Mustangs stretched their winning streak to 16 in an opening-round victory Thursday in the six-team Willamette Classic baseball tournament.
The talented shortstop had two hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 5-4 decision over Salem's Cooke Stationery at Willamette University's Lewis Field.
With the score knotted at 4-4, Mayben was hit by a pitch to open the seventh. Phil Ouellette followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt that he beat out for a base hit. Then Brent Foster grounded back to pitcher Kris Sleeman, who tried to throw out Mayben at third.
Instead, Sleeman threw the ball away, allowing Mayben to score the winning run.
Earlier, Mayben's RBI double in the fourth inning completed a three-run rally that tied the score at 4-4.
Colby Gonzales added two hits.
Jarred Pagnini (3-0) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven. He retired his last 10 batters.
The Mustangs (17-1) today play the Tacoma, Wash., and Longview, Wash.
