Junior bowlers sparkle during state tournament

Rogue Valley junior bowlers fared well in the 37th Oregon State Young American Bowling Alliance Tournament held at Medford Lanes during four consecutive weekends this spring.

Local bowlers won 10 division titles in the statewide handicap competition.

There were 1,664 entries in the tournament, 512 singles competitors, 288 doubles pairs and 144 four-person teams.

Robert Gibson of Central Point, Scott McCullough of Talent, Chris Drake of Medford, Dominique Newman of Medford and McKenzie Johnson of Medford were all double winners.

Gibson teamed with Summer Everist of Central Point to capture the Division 2 doubles title. The 18-year-old college students combined for a 1,464 total to edge Lisa Ganog and Brian Klinger of McMinnville by one pin.

Gibson also won the Oregon State Youth Leader portion of the tournament with a 1,631 singles total.

Gibson and Everist were both the 1997 Roxy Ann Lane bowlers of the year.

McCullough's 232 game helped him capture the Division — title. McCullough, who carries a 115 average, had an 899 singles total.

The 14-year-old Talent resident also won the Division — all-events crown with a 2,358 score.

All events consists of singles, doubles and team events plus handicap.

Drake, 7, tied for the Division 5 singles title with Jessica Friesen of Roseburg. Drake, who carries a 33 average, bowled a 240 three-game series to go with a 561 handicap for an 801 total.

Drake was also a member of the winning Alley Oops team in Division 5. Other team members were Chris Drake, Newman and Johnson.

Newman, 7, and Johnson, 6, teamed up to win Division 5 doubles with a 1,574 score.

Blake Daniels, 16, won Division 2 singles by five pins over Dustin Hoffer of Brookings. The Central Point bowler compiled a 574 scratch score to go with a 213 handicap for a 787 total.

Nick Nieto of Medford edged Buddy Taylor of Hermiston by four pins for the Division 4 singles championship. The 12-year-old posted a 795 total.

Devin Clinton, 14, won the Division 2 all events title. The Medford bowler had a 2,174 score in three events plus handicap.

Clinton, McCullough, Crystal Patterson and Kim Russell were awarded $100 Maxine Larson Memorial Scholarships.
