Allred latest Ashland golfer in U.S. Amateur
-- It'll be old home week at the U.S. Men's Amateur Golf Championship later this month.
Jason Allred became the second Ashland golfer in less than a week to qualify for the prestigious national tournament, which begins Aug. 16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Carmel, Calif.
He fired a 64 in qualifying Monday at the Plumas Lake Country Club, giving him a 9-under-par 133 through two days. He shot a 2-under 69 Sunday.
Allred joins former Ashland High teammate Andrew Tredway as a qualifier. Last Tuesday, Tredway was medalist in sectional qualifying at the Oregon Golf Association Members Course in Woodburn.
This won't be Allred's first brush with a national amateur championship. In 1997, before a national television audience, Allred captured the U.S. junior national title.
Another highlight of Allred's occurred a year later, when he shot back-to-back, course-record rounds of 64 at Rogue Valley Country Club. They came in the Southern Oregon Conference district tournament.
Before Allred goes to Pebble Beach, he will compete this week in the North-South Men's Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Country Club, the site of this year's U.S. Open championship.
