COOS BAY-- Applications are now being accepted for the 20th annual Prefontaine Memorial Run, Sept. 18, held in conjunction with the Bay Area Fun Festival.
Nike sponsors the grand prize, an expense-paid trip to Myrskyla, Finland, to participate in the Lasse Viren Run in September 2000. A drawing among the top five men's and women's finishers, who are older than 18 on race day, determines the prize winner.
Awards will be given in five-year age groups. First- through third-place finishers in each division receive awards. Top men's and women's wheelchair finishers will also be honored.
High school team scores will be kept and the top three teams will receive trophies. All entrants will receive T-shirts.
The entry free is $12 prior to Sept. 14 and $15 thereafter. Registration forms are available by writing to the Prefontaine Memorial Run, P.O. Box 1380, Coos Bay, OR, 97420, or may be downloaded from the Pre Run's website at — .

league starts to form
A fall basketball league for adults and children will be held at Superior Gym and Fitness in Medford.
The league will run from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30 at the basketball arena, located at 886 Chevy Way (behind Airport Chevrolet). Entry deadline is Sept. 20.
Two men's leagues, one women's league, a varsity and JV league and a league for younger players (fifth through ninth grade) are planned.
Costs range from $175 to $250 per team.

CENTRAL POINT-- A cheerleading camp for kids ages 5-13 will be conducted at the Crater High football field Aug. 23-26 from 9-11 a.m.
Cost is $40 per child. Each additional child in the same family will pay $30.

to follow railroad route
. -- A 10-kilometer run through the scenic Shasta Valley is set for Aug. 28.
The event, known as the Caboose Race, will cover the same route used by the Blue Goose Race railroad in past years.
An optional 2K run is also available. Cost is $10.
Runners will be bussed from the Yreka Family YMCA at 7:30 a.m. on the day of run to the starting line.
