Eagle, Panther grid alums to play Aug. 21

Eagle Point will host South Medford in a fund-raising alumni football game Aug. 21.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Eagle Stadium. The admission charge is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

Vipers place second in Washoe soccer tilt

RENO, Nev. -- The Rogue Valley Vipers took second place in the U-12 boys division of the Washoe Zephyr Invitational soccer tournament, July 24-25.

The Vipers lost the championship match, 4-2, in overtime to the Carson Chivas. The local team has put together an 11-1-1 record in three summer tournaments, outscoring opponents 55-6. They were 3-1 at Washoe, outscoring foes 19-5. They beat Truckee, Calif., 9-0, Rail City of Nevada, 5-1, and Lodi, Calif., 3-0.

Sweeper Matt Bladek and goalie Mike Belzberg were named co-MVPs. Beto Cabrera led the team with seven goals.

Local soccer squads gain tournament entries

PORTLAND -- Four Rogue Valley Soccer Club squads went undefeated in winning their brackets in the opening round of the state qualifying tournament. The U-11 girls X-plosion, U-12 girls Crossfire and U-12 boys Sabres will play in next weekend's final at Canby.

The U-14 girls Storm went 5-0, and earned a spot in the premier league.

The U-13 girls Fury, U-13 boys Vipers and U-14 Rogue Rapids previously earned premier league berths. Another three will compete at Class Level 2: The U-13 girls Avalanche, U-14 boys Clash and the U-14 girls Tsunami.

Football skills camp slated at South Medford

South Medford High will hold a football skills camp Monday through Thursday.

The camp is open to all middle school (grades 7-8) and South Medford students.

Cost for the middle school camp is $30. The sessions will take place from 9 a.m.-noon.

Cost for the high school camp is $40. There will be two sessions daily, from 9-noon and 3-5:30 p.m.

Registration takes place Monday from 8-9 a.m. at the South Medford High gym.

Junior golf tourney on tap at Bear Creek

A junior PGA championship is scheduled next Tuesday at Bear Creek Golf Course.

The nine-hole stroke play competition is open to players 17-and-younger. Cost is $15, including green fees, lunch, prizes and trophies.

Bulkley lands four golds in masters track & field

GATESHEAD, England -- Dan Bulkley captured four gold medals to go with a silver and bronze at the World Veteran's Track and Field Championships last week.

Bulkley extended his unbeaten streaks in the 300-meter hurdles and 2,000-meter steeplechase to a dozen years.

The former Southern Oregon University physical education instructor, who resides in Phoenix, competed in the 80-84-year-old division. He won golds in both the 80 and 300 hurdles -- bettering his pending world master's mark in 300 hurdles, steeplechase and 4x400 relay.

He teamed up with Rod Parker, Archie Messenger and Mel Larson to win the 75 age-group relay gold.

Bulkley took the silver medal in the 800 and bronze in the 1,500.

Speed and conditioning camp slated at North

The North Medford Black Tornado football speed and conditioning camp is scheduled for Aug. 16-20 at the North Medford High practice fields.

The camp, directed by Tornado head coach Rod Rumrey, runs from 5:50 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. each day. It is open to any player entering grades 7-12.

Cost is $3 per player.

South parents invited to eligibility night

South Medford High will hold a fall athletic eligibility night at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school's auditorium.

All fall athletes and their parents are encouraged to attend the session, which will provide a sports overview and a review of student eligibility requirements.

Athletes and their parents will have an opportunity to interact with individual coaches.

If all the required criteria are met, students will immediately receive their sports eligibility card.

North girls soccer workout is next week

A conditioning camp for North Medford High girls soccer will be held Monday through Friday.

The camp will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the girls soccer field adjacent to the school.

Players should bring water, soccer shoes and running shoes.
