Pipeline captures softball title

Kevin Ray earned most valuable player honors and Kelly Richardson was the MVP pitcher as Brotherton Pipeline of Medford won the Northwest Regional Fastpitch Softball Tournament in Portland last weekend.

Brotherton beat the Metro Merchants of Portland 3-2 in the championship game. The Medford squad scored all of its runs in the fifth inning, capped by doubles from Wynn Malikowski and John VanEss, along with a single from Ray.

In earlier games, Brotherton defeated Regal Construction of Everett, Wash., 5-2; the Metro Merchants, 5-3; Washington Recycling, 5-1; and the Boise Brewers, 13-2.

Ray went 12-for-18 with 10 runs, four doubles and four RBIs in the five games, while Richardson was the winning pitcher in four contests.

Bennie Boehm, Keith Willard, Morgan Mapes and Malikowski were named to the all-star team, along with Ray and Richardson.

The veteran Mapes replaced Richardson in the late innings of three games and preserved a victory each time.

officials to meet on Monday

Volleyball officials, experienced or otherwise, are invited to join the Rogue Valley Volleyball Officials Association.

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday in Room 19 at South Medford High School's annex building.

The season begins Sept. 9.

records ace at Eagle Point

EAGLE POINT-- Mike Kirkpatrick registered his first hole-in-one in 30 years of golf Thursday at Eagle Point Golf Course.

Kirkpatrick aced the 156-yard eighth hole with a 5-iron.

His playing partners were Pat Kirkpatrick, Brett Herr and Ron Rogers.
