Ashland No. 3 in this poll

The first games of the prep football season are little more than a week away.

In case you're wondering who the teams to beat are in the Class 4A ranks, Noland's High School Preview has released its top 10 for 1999.

Not surprisingly, the Southern Oregon Conference has two of the top three teams: No. — Roseburg and No. — Ashland.

The schools have combined to produce six state championships in the past 10 years, with Ashland defeating Roseburg, 29-26, in last year' state final.

The Indians return senior quarterback Kevin Linderman and junior tailback Conway Bixby and the biggest line in 29th-year head coach Thurman Bell's tenure.

The Indians begin play at No. 6 Beaverton Sept. — and have been ranked No. 8 in the West by USA Today.

Ashland plays an exhibition game against a Japanese all-star team from the Osaka/Kyoto region on Sept. 3, then travels to Roseburg to open the regular season on Sept. 10.
