T'jacks pay back Volcanoes
Coming off a disappointing doubleheader sweep at the hands of Salem-Keizer Wednesday, Southern Oregon redeemed itself with a 10-2 rout of the Volcanoes Thursday in Northwest League baseball.
The Timberjacks exploded for 13 hits, complementing the pitching of Keith Surkont.
Surkont allowed seven hits and two runs, one unearned, through six innings and ran his record to 4-3.
Northwest League all-star Bryan Mazur pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a runner.
Southern Oregon began its scoring in the first inning. Matt Forbes smacked a one-out double and came around to score following a Mike Lockwood RBI single.
Kirk Asche stroked a single to center to lead off the second and moved around to third following back-to-back walks to Brad Henderson and Jorge Soto.
With the bases loaded, Gerald Laird scored Asche with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Salem-Keizer cut the lead in half in the third-inning but would get no closer.
Southern Oregon tallied five runs on three hits and an error in the fourth. Jamie Porter delivered the key blow with a two-run single to make it 7-2.
Forbes led the way for the Timberjacks offensively, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Asche and Henderson each contributed two hits.
Southern Oregon continues to lead the Southern Division of the NWL standings by — games over Portland.
The Timberjacks and Salem-Keizer meet again at 7:05 tonight at Miles Field.
