Pirates edge Yreka, 13
YREKA, Calif. -- Phoenix's defense produced at crunch time in a 13-12 season-opening football victory over Yreka on Friday night.
The Pirates capitalized on Bryon Monical's interception at the Miner 30-yard line for the go-ahead touchdown with a little more than three minutes remaining in the non-conference game.
It took Phoenix only three plays to score with 2:23 left on an 8-yard burst off tackle by fullback Chris Loftin.
The touchdown was set up by a second-down pass play from quarterback Bobby Dawson to Travis Dunlap that carried to the Yreka 8.
Phoenix took the opening kickoff and went the distance on a sustained march. Dawson found Dunlap on a pass over the middle at the Yreka — and the 231-pound junior completed the 8-yard TD reception.
After the Pirates fell behind 12-7 in the third quarter, Phoenix came up with a big-stop when Yreka got down to the Pirates' 20.
Yreka amassed 270 yards in offense but the Pirates limited Yreka to 20 yards in the fourth quarter. And the Miners failed on all seven pass attempts in the final period.
Phoenix totaled 258 yards from scrimmage, with Loftin producing a team-high 85 yards on the ground.
