Raiders upset Western Baptist; coach wins 200th

ASHLAND

-- Southern Oregon University shut down 21st-ranked Western Baptist in straight games and provided Raider volleyball coach Paul Elliott with his 200th career coaching victory Friday at McNeal Pavilion.

Led by a strong all-around performance by sophomore hitter Kristina Wurtz and a team-high 10 kills by senior hitter Monica Fisher, Southern Oregon opened Cascade Conference action with a 15-11, 15-7 and 15-4 victory over the Warriors (4-3, 0-1 Cascade).

Elliott, one of only three SOU coaches ever to reach the 200-win plateau, is now 200-100 in nine seasons at the Raider helm.

Wurtz finished with nine kills, three aces and 12 digs against Western Baptist. Senior setter Erin Lytle of Ashland equalled Wurtz's match-high dig effort while assisting in 33-of-43 Raider kills.

I was very pleased with our focus for the entire match, even when we had some big leads, Elliott said. We played well defensively all night and looked sharp attacking the ball later in the match.

Western Baptist sophomore middle Teri Schneider, a former Crater High standout, tallied five kills and four blocks.

The Raiders (8-2, 1-0 Cascade) return to the McNeal Pavilion court at 7 p.m. tonight for a conference match against Concordia College.
