Smeltz has hand in six Logger TDs

-- Quarterback Travis Smeltz accounted for six touchdowns as Butte Falls opened its Skyline A League 8-man football season Friday with a 60-32 victory over Camas Valley.

Smeltz, a 5-foot-10, 150-pound senior rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns on five carries, completed 5-of-7 passes for two more scores and returned a punt 70 yards for a TD.

Sophomore Nick Rogers carried 11 times for 100 yards, including a 65-yard score and caught a 35-yard TD pass from Smeltz.

In all, the Loggers piled up 519 yards in total offense, while allowing 233.

Camas Valley senior Jesse Banks scored four TDs on runs of 1, 26 and — yards and a 72-yard kickoff return. He finished with 144 yards on 17 carries and returned an interception 59 yards.

GRANTS PASS 31, CROOK COUNTY 0-- At Prineville, Brandon Hamada rushed for two touchdowns and Grants Pass' defense turned in a sterling performance en route to a season-opening non-conference victory.

Hamada broke a scoreless tie with a 7-yard burst in the second quarter and added the Cavemen's fourth TD with an 18-yard romp in the third quarter.

Junior quarterback Nathen Olson tossed his first varsity TD pass -- an 18-yarder to Robbie Lesher -- to make it 14-0 at the half.

Jesse Lara extended Grants Pass' advantage with a 19-yard dash early in the third quarter.

Jay Slack booted four PATs and a 22-yard field goal.

MAZAMA 34, KLAMATH UNION 26-- At Klamath Falls, Tyler Starkey picked off a Dylan Woodrum pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 30 yards for the winning touchdown in the Canal Bowl. Klamath Union led 26-13 starting the final period, the was outscored 21-0.

Starkey ran for 65 yards on 17 carries and Trevor Harris led Klamath Union with 96 yards.

Woodrum completed 17 of 31 passes for 194 yards to pace the air attack for KU. Starkey hit 7-for-13 for 77 yards for the Knights.

ETNA, CALIF. 42, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-- At Etna, Calif., Ryan Lampaela hooked up with Ryan Hausauer on a 22-yard touchdown pass to cap a 21-point second quarter for Etna, putting the game out of reach.

Cascade Christian surrendered three more TDs in the third quarter before it scored. J.J. Vanroy scored on a 55-yard interception return for the Challengers.
