Raider netters start off strong in conference

ASHLAND

-- The Southern Oregon University volleyball team held off an intense Concordia rally to beat the Cavaliers 15-0, 15-12, 6-15, 15-12 at McNeal Pavilion on Saturday night.

The victory completed a weekend sweep of two season-opening Cascade Conference

matches for the Raiders, who knocked off 21st-ranked Western Baptist on Friday.

Middle blocker Kacee Jacobsen led the Raiders with 14 kills and a career-high 10 blocks. Senior hitter Monica Fisher added 13 kills and three blocks and senior setter Erin Lytle had 52 assists.

SOU, which improved to 9-2 overall, won the first two games but lost the third and then trailed 11-6 in the fourth. But Jacobsen put a stop to the Cavaliers' rally by blocking three balls for points during a 5-0 run that tied the game 11-11. Sophomore Shelley Gorin's game-winning smash of a Concordia overpass capped a 4-0 Raider surge that closed out the match.
