Prep soccer

North Medford ended up with an advantage in shots, but Corvallis scored the game's only goal in girls non-conference soccer Friday at District Field.

Savannah Popovic's goal five minutes into the second half gave the Spartans a 1-0 victory over the Southern Oregon Conference preseason favorite.

We had several opportunities, said North Medford coach Dick Darcy. We just didn't put the ball in the back of the net.

North outshot Corvallis, 10-3.

The Black Tornado's stifling defense was led by Bethanie Bryant and returning SOC all-star Jamie MacLauchlan.

They outplayed us, said Darcy. They played a good hard game and we didn't respond.

SOUTH EUGENE 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1-- South Eugene's Rayney Meisel punched in the third and final goal in the 42nd minute en route to a non-conference win at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

Colleen Salisbury scored the lone South Medford goal in the 49th minute to prevent the shutout.

Katie Janssen-O'Connell and Megan Nelson provided the rest of the offense for South Eugene. Janssen-O'Connell's goal broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute while Nelson's score off a corner kick in the 33rd minute made it 2-0 going into the half.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 1-1 on the season.

SOUTH MEDFORD 1, SOUTH EUGENE 1-- At Eugene, South Eugene's Nate Jaqua knocked home the tying goal with one minute left in regulation to spoil South Medford's upset bid of the defending state champion.

Pat Lower gave the Mustangs (0-1-1) the lead at the 60th minute with a left-footed bending shot into the net from 20 yards out.

Jaqua, last year's 4A player of the year, was held in check most of the afternoon until the final minute.

CORVALLIS 3, NORTH MEDFORD 1-- At Corvallis, the Spartans scored on their first shot and never trailed in the non-conference match.

North's goal was scored by Aaron Abbott on an assist from Dominic Crenshaw.

The Black Tornado (0-1-1) received strong performances from outside halfback Crenshaw, defenders Dustin Wallace and Danny Ferris and midfielder Scott Jolly.

CRATER 6, WEST ALBANY 0-- At Albany, six Crater players scored as the Comets improved to 4-0 in non-conference play.

Crater led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Jason Licato and Peter Kashevarof. In the second half, Nate Tewes, Ben Nystrom, Aaron Kell and Ryan Rackley tallied.

Rackley also had two assists.
