Raiders rout Menlo, run record to 4-1
. -- Tailback Griff Yates continued his magical season and quarterback Dan Walters had his best game of the year as Southern Oregon University galloped to a 34-0 victory over Menlo College on Saturday.
Walters fired a pair of touchdown passes and Yates had three touchdown runs as the Raiders ran their record to 4-1, their best start since 1991.
They stacked up their defense to stop the run and that opened up the play-action passes, SOU coach Jeff Olson said. Walters hit the open receiver most of the day and we got a good game out of our tight end (Mando Morlas).
Yates, the leading rusher at the NAIA level at 170 yards per game, scored the game's first touchdown on a spectacular 41-yard run. The senior from Coquille was seemingly stopped cold on a sweep but broke two tackles at the line of scrimmage, cut up the field and rambled into the end zone.
The Raiders led 21-0 at halftime.
Menlo had a couple of opportunities to score but SOU's Nick Daniken and Nate Williams came up with interceptions.
The shutout was the first for the Raiders since 1991 and the victory matched SOU's win total of last season when it went 4-6.
The guys were happy to get the win but there wasn't a lot of whopping and hollering, Olson said. This is an older group and they've got a very workmanlike approach.
SOU plays host to Simon Fraser next Saturday.
