Kennedy, Isley propel Mustangs, 49-23
-- Senior quarterback Matt Kennedy threw for 284 yards and four touchdowns and senior receiver Willie Isley caught eight passes for 198 yards and four TDs Friday night as Hidden Valley rolled to a 49-23 Skyline Conference football victory at Jack Woodward Stadium.
We knew we had to put pressure on Kennedy, but our line is young and beat up, Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. We just didn't get it done and he had time to throw.
Phoenix (4-2, 2-2 Skyline) fumbled the opening kickoff and the Mustangs (5-1, 3-1) recovered at the Pirates' 30.
Nick Mason, who rushed for 137 yards on 20 carries, staked the Mustangs to a quick 6-0 lead. Kyle Kennedy responded with a 27-yard field goal for Phoenix.
Then Mason rammed across the the goal line from the — and tacked on a two-point conversion run to make it 14-3.
After Isley hauled in a 29-yard scoring pass, the Pirates set sail on a long drive capped by Nick Metcalf's nine-yard reception from junior quarterback Bobby Dawson with less than two minutes left in the half.
But Dereck Horning reeled in a pass from Kennedy and slipped through several tackles, racing down the sideline as Hidden Valley took a 28-10 lead at the half.
That score with 55 seconds to go broke our back, Hagler said. The kid caught the ball and we were unable to tackle him or knock him out of bounds.
Probably the best thing about their receivers is what they do after they catch the ball. They were very elusive.
Isley also caught scoring passes of 23 and 16 yards from Kennedy and a 40-yarder from Rob Adler in the second half.
Dawson completed 17 of 31 passes for 283 yards and one interception. He hooked up with Bryon Monical for a 6-yard TD and ran one yard for another score in the fourth quarter.

HENLEY 14, MAZAMA 0-- At Klamath Falls, fourth-ranked Henley made two second-quarter touchdowns stand up in a showdown between the Skyline Conference's last two unbeaten teams.
The Hornets (6-0, 4-0 Skyline) had a relatively slim 289-271 advantage in total offense, but stopped the Vikings four times inside the 25 -- twice on fumbles and twice on downs.
After stopping Mazama (5-1, 3-1) inside the Henley 10 early in the second quarter, the Hornets drove the length of the field to take a 7-0 lead on junior fullback John Townsend's one-yard plunge up the middle and Frank Gauntz's PAT kick.
Shortly after a Mazama punt, Henley doubled its lead when senior receiver Jeremy Axel burst 55 yards on a reverse around the left side, picking up a key block from Eric Wietlisbach. Gauntz's kick was good again.
Greg Conover rushed 27 times for 183 yards for the Hornets, who limited Mazama quarterback Tyler Starkey to 55 yards rushing on 13 carries.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 21, LAKEVIEW 14-- At Lakeview, the Cougars used their rushing game to control the clock and then went to the air to overcome Lakeview in Skyline Conference action.
Trailing 14-13 with five minutes to play, Illinois Valley's Jared Larsen connected with Kevin Fox for a 27-yard TD to put the Cougars up for good. Larsen added the two-point conversion.
Lakeview (0-6, 0-4 Skyline) tried to answer but only managed to get to the Illinois Valley 30-yard-line before throwing an interception. The Cougars (2-4, 1-3) ran out the clock from there.
Mike Peterson's 16-yard TD run put IV up early but Lakeview's Ben Osborne countered with a nine-yard touchdown to even the contest.

Howard scored four touchdowns, two on the ground and two in the air, and totalled 279 yards rushing and receiving.
Both of Howard's TD receptions came from junior Donnie Andresen, who also excelled on defense. Andresen sparked the Prospect defense, which had North Lake shut out through three quarters, with four sacks and seven tackles from the interior line.
