Leon named top boxer at Reno tourney

Reno, Nev.

-- Medford's Bulldog Boxing Club won nine of 12 bouts and captured the team title at the Ray Tavares Memorial Tournament Saturday at the Reno Boys and Girls Club.

The Bulldogs Lionel Leon defeated Theron Delorme of the Reno Jets in a senior, 125-pound match and was also selected as the outstanding boxer in the tournament.

Lionel fought a real smart fight, Bulldog trainer Jim Pedrojetti said. He outboxed Delorme and had him frustrated. He had too much speed and quickness.

The Bulldog Club registered other wins by Luis Regalado, who decisioned Dominic Smith of the Reno Jets (9-year-old, 55-pound); Tito Torres, who stopped Wade Smith of Carson City in the second round (9-10, 70); Manuel Gonzalez, who decisioned Omar Smith of the Reno Jets (10-11, 75); Javier Torres, who stopped Jovan Villasenor of the Reno Jets in the first round (10-11, 100); Austin Hernandez, who decisioned Jimmy Saldana of the Reno Jets (12-13, 95); Oscar Aguirre, who stopped Rembert Salguero of the Reno Jets (13-14, 130); Sam Sleezer, who decisioned Jewel Saganey of the Reno Jets (senior, 201+); and Ricky Gallegos, who decisioned Al Goranson of the Reno Jets (16-17, 139).

The Bulldog losses came from Nathan James (sr., 147), Alex Ponce (9-10, 65) and Alex Trujillo (13-14, 130).
