Sawyer and Coolidge win for St. Mary's

ROSEBURG-- Winning cross country races is old hat for St. Mary's junior Trevor Coolidge, but it was a new experience for freshman Leah Sawyer

Coolidge won his second straight boys District 5 championship Thursday on the Roseburg Veteran's Administration Hospital grounds.

Meanwhile, Sawyer's surprise victory helped St. Mary's to a second-place finish in the district meet as the Crusaders notched their third straight trip to state.

The state meet is Nov. 6 at Lane Community College in Eugene.

That was a big surprise, admitted Sawyer, whose best previous finish this season was fourth in a three-way meet at Bear Creek Park.

She beat her previous best for 5,000 meters by 30 seconds in finishing a solid 28 seconds ahead of runner-up Jenny Herbage of Gold Beach.

What was the difference? Sawyer pondered. I don't know. Before the race, everyone thinks of a plan. I just decided to go out and it didn't matter how uncomfortable I was.

Sawyer and teammate Martina Patella, the 1997 state champion, tried to break away from the pack early. But Patella, who was went home from school with the flu on Wednesday, wasn't able to keep pace.

(Patella) hadn't eaten all day and it just kind of hit her and she had to slow down, Sawyer said of her teammate who wound up fifth. But she really helped me.

Sawyer took advantage of a big break when Canyonville Christian Academy freshman Reyna Vasquez prematurely pulled off the course and entered the finish chute slightly more than halfway through the race.

She was confused and all the people there were yelling for her to sprint, Sawyer said. I looked at my watch and I knew I couldn't have possibly finished in 12:43.

Sawyer maintained her pace and finished in 20 minutes, 42 seconds. Her previous best time was 21:19.

Vasquez eventually returned to the course and finished ninth as Canyonville took first with 35 points. St. Mary's had 53, while Pacific was third with 70.

It came down to our three, four, five and six runners, marking Pacific's 3-4-5-6 runners and passing them about halfway through, St. Mary's coach Joe Volk said.

Coolidge didn't have to pass anyone. Showing the strength that allowed him to finish fourth in the state a year ago, Coolidge led Gold Beach's Kyle Robbins' by three seconds after one mile and upped it to six seconds after two miles.

I took off right at the gun, Coolidge said. I didn't want to have anybody in front of me. It was fairly wet and muddy, and I wanted to get around the puddles without getting splashed by anyone else.
