Bartels' heroics not enough for Phoenix

MURPHY -- Hidden Valley geared its defense on stopping Phoenix career 3-point leader Gabe Willard in Skyline Conference boys basketball on Saturday. So Pirates junior Andy Bartels ripped the Mustangs for 25 points.

Despite Bartels second 20-plus scoring performance in as many nights, Phoenix (2-14, 0-6 Skyline) is still looking for its first conference victory of the season after the Mustangs rallied for a 59-53 victory.

We were really worried about Willard shooting 3's, Hidden Valley coach Robbie Tate said. We concentrated on him and that allowed Bartels to get open.

The Pirates led by one point at halftime and built the margin to 38-30 midway through the third quarter. Then Hidden Valley (8-8, 4-2 Skyline) put a fullcourt press on the Pirates and went on a 14-2 run.

We trapped their guards and tried to make things happen, Tate said. We tend to run the floor pretty well.

The Mustangs widened their advantage to 52-42 with about three minutes to go and hit crucial free throws down the stretch. Hidden Valley was 6-of-7 from the line in the final period, including 5-of-6 by Willy Isley.

Bartels and Willard accounted for all the Pirates scoring in the fourth quarter. Bartels had eight points, while Willard added five.

He's (Bartels) so deadly, said Tate. If you're in his face, he'll go by you. If you're not in his face, he'll hit 3's.
