Wilson beats older foe in USA bout

Wilson beats older foe in USA bout

PORTLAND

-- Medford's Mike Wilson was a bit taken aback when he walked into the gym at the University Park Community Center Saturday and saw 28-year-old Sean Lancaster of Kelso, Wash.

Wilson, 16, was making his first appearance in senior division competition at the Oregon USA Boxing Championships.

But once Wilson stepped into the ring with his older super heavyweight opponent, all bets were off. The Bulldog Boxing Club star hammered on Lancaster, the defending Oregon golden gloves champion, for four rounds and won a decision.

The victory earned Wilson a berth in next week's USA Boxing Regional Championships at Tacoma, Wash.

In another bout, Richardo Guterrez of the Bulldogs lost a decision to former national champion Andre Hayes of Portland at 178 pounds.

Seven Bulldog boxers advanced to next week's tournament at Tacoma via the unopposed route: Lionel Leon (119 pounds), Salvadore Regalado (125), Ricky Gallegos (132), Nathan James (139), Homero Gonzalez (147) and Sam Sleezer (201).

Champions from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska advance to next week's tourney, with the winners earning a berth at nationals and a spot in the Olympic Trials.
