wins against Vanderhoff, Wolves

Two former Southern Oregon Conference standouts met on the basketball court recently during a college matchup between Western Oregon University and Montana State University.

Guard Jamie Stevens, who played at St. Mary's, then transferred to Grants Pass for his senior high school year, helped Montana State to a 111-87 victory over Western Oregon and guard Mike Vanderhoff.

Vanderhoff starred at South Medford.

In their meeting Saturday, Stevens had 11 points, seven assists and three rebounds.

Vanderhoff, who entered the game averaging 23.1 points, got in foul trouble and played only 19 minutes, scoring 18 points, including 15 in the second half. He also had five assists and four rebounds. He eventually fouled out.

Globetrotters to perform in Ashland

The Harlem Globetrotters will play an exhibition basketball game on Feb. 22 at Southern Oregon University's McNeal Pavilion.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. game are on sale in the SOU athletic department. They are priced at $12 and $16.

The Globetrotters have captivated and entertained audiences with their basketball skills and showmanship for more than 70 years. They will play a traveling team in the exhibition game.

to form triathlon club scheduled

Runners, swimmers, cyclists and other athletes are invited to a meeting to discuss organizing a triathlon club in the Rogue Valley.

The meeting is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ashland Raquet Club, 735 Jefferson Way, in Ashland. Athletes will gather at — p.m. to chat and swap stories before the organizing meeting begins.

Triathletes compete against each other and the clock over a course that includes running, swimming and cycling. There are separate age grouped competitions for men and women.

Marc Powell of Ashland, who is organizing the meeting, said the club will encourage athletes to train and travel together.

youth wrestlers place at Oregon Classic

ORTLAND -- Five North Medford youth wrestlers placed in the Oregon Classic Saturday.

Christopher Foster and Cody Clark brought home first-place prizes, while Kyle Marci and brothers Josh Smith and Nick Smith each placed fourth.

Foster was in the 120-plus-pound division for 10-year-olds, and Clark won the 105-pound, age-11 class. Marci was in the age-12, 95-pound division, Josh Smith was in the age-12, 80-pound group and Nick Smith the age-14, 209-242-pounder class.
